Colorful shadows chase people in this interactive installation.

1D Shadow 2017

1D Shadow is an interactive video installation that allows people to experience the flatness of a one-dimensional space. Visitors to the gallery see two white walls on opposite sides that display 14-foot tall vertical bands matching the colors of their clothes trailing them as they move.

The project uses a ceiling-mounted camera and computer vision software to detect the people inside the space. The colors of clothes are extracted and turned into vertical color stripes projected back onto the walls of the space in real-time.

Video of the installation at Lightbox, in New York, on October 2017.

The installation is ideal for traffic areas, lobbies, galleries, etc. These environments transform by allowing individuals and groups to play with their 1D shadows in their own way.
